Might want to try OpenOffice it is free and works quite well unless you have a specific need.

After a quick pass, it seemsit doesn't read .pub files...

Try Ragtime 6 or PagePlus SE (from freeserifsoftware), I've never used it myself but I've heard its a nice free alternative for desktop publishing

ZaZ is an awesome helper here. Picks up my slack.
I tried Open Office but I noticed that there was a few differences in XL and
talked my boss into getting me a license for Office so I could work on xls docs from home. *yea* I barely work @ work, and they think I work from home too. Keep up the great work ZaZ!

For the casual user like myself it is a nice free alternative to the grossly overpriced Office, but not for everyone.

Try www.journeyed.com. You can get office 2003 Pro with Publisher for $179.98 if your a K-12, college student, or a teacher and can prove it. Or if your school is on their list, like mine is, you can get it for $79.99. Yes I got Office Pro for $80. All I did to prove my enrolment was scan my student ID and then e-mail it to them, I got it a few days later with CD keys and all.
