for avi/mpg files to be able to burn to dvd and watch them on my dvd player without any hassle.
any suggestions?
free programs would be best.

FAVC has about the best free encoder. Creates simple menus for up to eight titles per disk too.

The same company that creates Power DVD also sells Power Producer - burns DVDs...
Just on a side note:
Can't Windows Movie Maker (or whatever its called) burn DVDs?
