After an hour my keyboard as well as the on screen keyboard loses the ability to register the s letter the capital s works fine so I don't think it's the physical keyboard. This started after I used the character map to type some special characters. The keyboard works fine after a computer restart. the drivers are updated.

What laptop is this? Is this an external keyboard, or the laptop's keyboard? If external, is it wired or wireless? USB? Which OS are we talking about - XP, Vista, 7?

OK it it turns out there was a conflict with the VLC player I changed the hotkey for space to the lower case s. VLC player runs in the background and places it's icon on downloaded files this is when the s key was hijacked. I uninstalled VLC and used ccleaner to clean the registry. I expect VLC will solve this conflict in future editions.
losing my s
