What are some good maintenance software to keep your laptop working as it was new list some software, the only ones i know and use are
CCcleaner
Jdk defrag
-
CCleaner is the BEST registry cleaner ever.
Any Defragmenter will do the same job. LOL. Windows Defragmenter for Vista/7 is good enough already.
If you're willing to pay, I will suggest Tune-Up Utilities 2009.
This software is very useful ^^! It have Registry Cleaner, Registry Defraggler, Defragmenter, Windows Tweaking Stuffs and so on.
You need Antivirus as well. Don't forget about it. I will say FREE version of Avast! and Avira are the BEST Antivirus you can get out there. AVG(over populate) is lame and sucks. Yet, some don't believe. After trying Avira, they will know AVG is indeed suck.
Windows Firewall and Windows Defender should turned on too. -
In most cases, using "optimization software" on Vista or later will just cuase problems.
CCleanerfor removing temp files is fine
Defragmentation - if you search the forums - there have been reports tat JKDfrag slows down Vista compared to the Vista utility
For defragmenting I suggest you use the Vista utility - also note that there is no need to defragment very regularly.
I generally suggest not using "tuning software" as it can damage things on your installation - stress can. -
Tweaking or tuning around Windows System can cause some problems later if you don't know how to handle. Personally, I did some tweaking but very minor. So, I don't experience any problem for such a long time.
Tune-Up Utilities offers a lot of tuning, need to be careful on choosing them to apply. In might screw-up your system if you're not in luck. In addition, avoid less famous tweaking/tuning software, these software suck.
Want to use tweaking/tuning software, ask for opinions from the other. -
cCleaner is good as mentioned above, and the defrag just leave it to Vista as Detlev had said, with once every few months running MyDefrag (in my case). Not recommended if using SSDs though
With XP - tweak along.
cheers ... -
Ccleaner is good for disk cleanup. Just don't use it's registry cleaning functions. In fact, even the in-built windows disk cleanup utilility is pretty decent.
Windirstat is a useful utility for checking up on hard drive space consumption. It's free too.

I use Diskeeper for defragging; it's set-and-forget, and works really well on Vista/XP.
Other than that the usual arsenal of A/V and malware scanners eg. Avira, Malwarebytes AM, Super antispyware, etc.
Also, lightweight unintrusive apps like Foxit reader, irfanview, VLC player, Opera etc are useful to derive max peformance from available resources. -
In this regard, Windows has improved greatly and largely has no need of 3rd party maintenance software (which is crap anyways, for the most part). -
I use:
CCleaner
Defraggler (made by Piriform, same people who made CCleaner)
Disc Cleanup -
I re-format every three months or so.
No maintenance for me -
But I did do the maintenance because I want my System to run smoothly(optimal state).
Re-formatting the System after a few months was to test new stuffs or sometime System got a little unstable(which can't be revert because Windows Restore disabled) due to my experiments. XD

Don't install the utility of the week, don't install 15 different codec packs, don't install every random media player you can find, and ESPECIALLY don't visit crack sites and deal with pirated software... spend a little time doing some research on what software will do what you want, and try to install as few applications as you can to encompass all you want to do with your machine. -
i could never format every 3 months, way too much of a hassle.
for a defrag i recommend disctrix ultimate defrag. it works just as well as the others, but it does one thing differently. it places high use files on the outside of the drive for faster access. or it can work as a regular defrag as well.
as for maintenance utilities, if you are going to use anything use advanced system optimizer, I like it much better than tuneup.
though i haven't tried the newest tuneup so maybe things have changed. -
But they are absolutely safe.
I totally agree with the codec and media players installation.
You won't turn on all of them at once also. =.=!
On the other hand, do not install a lot Antivirus as well. Choose the BEST antivirus and install it only. Obviously, do not choose the Antivirus which can slowdown the system a lot(means resources eater).
