    okay...this is what I want.

    install windows
    run all the updates
burn this copy of windows to a cd/usb
install this burned copy of windows onto any random computer and i won't need to run any windows updates

*also, how does one go changing the product key in this case? I have legit keys already.

i'm told i need norton ghost to do this....is there another alternative?

You could create a System Image from Windows Backup which is similar to Norton Ghost but it's a built in feature of Windows 7. You can choose to back it up on to DVDs or an external hard drive, and when the time comes you can just reload the original image using the System Recovery Options. You can read more about the procedure from this site.

Another way is doing System Deployment using Sysprep and ImageX but unfortunately its quite complex and needs a bit of work. (=__=). If you're brave enough you can go through the guide set by Microsoft, they even done a tutorial video which probably makes it slightly easier to understand.

Sysprep method is worth the time only if you have 1000s of computers to set up. Otherwise, install OS like normal and do everything you need and then clone it.
