Every time I try to play an .mkv file in divx, media player classic, vlc, etc they freeze or the audio is out of sync with the video. I got some random codec pack and it still does it. Does anyone know why this might be?
-
I use Combined Community Codec Pack; K-Lite is another good codec pack (install one of them). VLC player uses its own built in codecs while other players (i.e DivX player) use system codecs, if all players show same symptoms then it may not be a codec problem. What is the resolution of the videos you are trying to play ? What is your CPU and GPU ? Are you trying to play them over a network share ?
-
Depends on the codecs you use, as well as (to some degree) the speed of your PC.
I use K-lite Codec Pack as well and I've never encountered such problems. Did you tweak certain settings btw? -
Don't mix and match codec packs otherwise conflicts between the two can result in sloppy video playback. I use K-Lite myself and although it isn't the latest version all my videos still play fine with no skipping.

are these hd x264 encodes in the mkv? if so, check out coreavc codecs combined with media player classic.
http://www.coreavc.com/
though the pro version is readily available through questionable means, i highly suggest purchasing to help fund the only acceptable hd decoder out there. -
CoreAVC is the best codec for x254 video decoding but pretty costly so i would recommend FFdshow as a free alternative to it ....
-
FFdshow is what I have right now, sorry not to be more specific before. Should I try uninstalling it or something because of the conflict possibility because I also think I have a divx codec pack as well?
-
Your CPU isn't by any chance maxing out during playback is it?
-
Yea , that might the cause too ... try narrowing down all the codecs packs installed and remove them

@jglatt
what your computer spec? this does affect the performance
if it is c2d, it shouldn't be any problem for playback, and just maybe codec problem -
True. If the system is an older single core or one with weak integrated graphics then it probably won't ever play HD properly, regardless of codec. The OP needs to post specs to rule out inadequate CPU/GPU.

remove all codec packs, reboot, reinstall ffdshow - be sure to select H.264 during install.
once ffdshow is installed, go to the video decoder configuration in the ffdshow start menu entry, select "Codecs" on the top left, make sure the "libavcodec" option is selected for "H.264". press "Apply" and then "OK."
then go to the audio decoder configuration, in the "Codecs" section, make sure the "libfaad2" option is selected for "AAC". press "Apply" and then "OK."
this should do it.

Uhm I'm on a gateway 173x fx so i dont think my specs are the problem. I'll try uninstalling all my codec packs and seeing what happens.
