It's acting like the left-mouse-button is being held down permanently -- move the mouse cursor, and everything on the desktop gets 'selected', actually click anywhere, and then it launches every program that's been selected.

Have tried rebooting, pulling the battery, and plugging in an external mouse, but nothing helped. The laptop's mouse-button is NOT actually stuck, it has normal click movement.

    Any ideas?

    Hi

Is it the Laptop Touchpad you're referring to?

In that case, I'd suggest you disconnect the touchpad (ribbon cable) from the mainboard, then try the external mouse (plugs in to a USB port?).

    good luck.

    If you mean the touchpad:
    1 Reinstall the driver?
2 Disable the touchpad in BIOS?
3 Tryin any kind of free Live CD to verify if windows cause this?
    If its a external mouse:
Try 1 and 3, try the mouse on other computer, clean it up. The button could stuck with button-click fully functional, especially if you have a furry cat as I do :)

I think the mouse is alive, put a mice trap :D

Also check if the mechanics is not stuck somehow.

If it's a laptop(and I think it is because you mentioned a battery), you could also try disabling 'Tap to Click' feature if it isn't already disabled, just to see if that works.

Another common cause is a stuck ctrl or shift key. Probably the ctrl key since you don't mention typing in Caps. Tap both ctrl keys repeatedly and see if that corrects the problem.

Finally got a chance to mess around with this (it's my wife's computer, and I've been really busy lately)...

The computer is an Acer Aspire 3000. The trackpad is worn completely smooth in the center area, and seems to be quite inaccurate at following finger movement, especially in the smoothest spots -- the cursor jumps around rather wildly, and, not 100% of the time, but more than 50%, it acts as if the user is holding down the left mouse button (on the trackpad), as everything on the desktop gets selected, etc.

The USB mouse I plugged in works fine (I was probably just confused when I first posted this topic).

Haven't had any luck finding out if it's possible to replace the touchpad, or if my wife just needs to use the external USB mouse (she likes to sit on the couch with the laptop in her lap, so she's resisting here).

    -- edit --
Also, none of the keys on the keyboard, nor the buttons on the touchpad are sticky.

And all this time I thought it was a mice, never thought it was the touchpad.

There must be vendors of touchpad on the web, just google it, and I also thought the couch was yours :D

I LOL when read the thread subject :p

Be sure to consult the Acer manual, or ask the Acer technical service for them to provide you the vendor of your touchpad.

Just to add my two cents' worth in - it might also be pressure on the touchpad coming from the frame of the computer. I occasionally get random pointer movement and phantom button clicks on my vaio, particularly if I've been using it for a while and the hdd's gotten hot (it's just to the left of the touchpad/button setup). I managed to get it to stop doing this by tightening a loose screw on the underside of the touchpad assembly, and by making sure that I don't put a lot of pressure on the left palmrest when I'm using it.

Get a cat, that should spice things up.
Open the mouse up and check if the keys do not stay pressed for some reason...
