I have taken an ext hdd recently, and i have put all seen movies on it. I was wondering if there was an organizer software which will download each movie details from some website like IMDB, and incorporate that so that I am able to arrange my collection according to various parameters like genre, release date or rating etc.

Ant Movie Catalog. Works great in XP, don't see why it wouldn't work in Vista. It has a Scripting Language so you could write a script to launch your playing software and comes with scripts to get info from IMDB and about 50 other sources.
