On iTunes, you are able to show duplicates. You can then delete from there. I think Media Monkey is another good program to organize your music.

i tried the itunes way and that was over kill. i want to keep one copy of the song and get rid of any duplicates of it. i probably should have said that from the beginning.

EDIT: MM is stupid. in the auto organize window it shows duplicates. but when i try to remove them it says that there arent any. it is contradicting itself. i looked thru the song list in mm and the duplicates are clear as day. :confused2:

is it completely the same? i mean... check the ID3 tags. in case that the album is named slightly differently... or have differently numbered discs... or genre, whatever... iTunes won't delete them as duplicates, as they are *different*.

/me loves perfectly tagged music ;)

the song name is the same. the album name is the same. the only thing that is different is the file name. does this make any sense?

it's not only the song name and album name. make sure that ALL items are completely same. (rightclick the song in iTunes and open the song info.) year, grouping, genre, disc number, whatever. in case that for example one song has specified disc 1 of 1 and the other does not, iTunes thinks that it's two different albums.

everything is the same except for the location. both are in the music folder. one is the name of the song and the other has the album and artist in the name along with the name of the song.
