...and while i am looking thoough the event viewer PhotoSnapViewer.exe errors are there. i've had a look though the registry and ther must be at least 1000 entries for nero  i have used an old version for a long time (only the burning bit) but am trying v9. it is incredibly bloated for what i use.
all i want is a simple burnng cd/dvd's and sometimes images.
even when i make dvd movie compilations i always have the option of images.
anything lightweight and free? does windows 7 have that built in?

When was Nero good? ;) You might want to give ImgBurn a try and it's free.

ok, just gave ImgBurn a try, yep, thats all i need. sweeet. 2.62mb installed, i can live with that
actually Kalim, my old nero 6 was good from win 98 days when windows couldnt handle images etc, it did what it was supposed to do ie. make dvd's and cds and was fairly small for only the burning.
i unticked as many boxes as i could for nero install and still ended up with 925mb  ()
just taken 5mins to uninstal and i need to reboot. hopefully its all gone (i doubt it though  )

edit: @Reconstructed: just also tried ashampoo, yes thats nice also, whopping 30mb install :D but a good number of options. also i can use the same on os x

will keep both for now. cheers

I think you gave the wrong link to Burnware.

I tried Burrrn to burn a few flac albums I have, but I found it a bit of work to setup to properly accept and burn flac audio.

So strange what happened to Nero. It was like it got taken over by alien programmers from Planet X who wanted to take over every PC it was installed on. That program needs to die.

I am loving the trend towards lighter, more efficient software, i.e. Imgburn et al, Chrome, Win 7, etc.

    indeed.
Whenever I see a program gets too bloated, I try to switch to something else.
Or I just find the essentials of the program I used without bloat.

Nero has fallen far from the glory it once had... I would recommend "ImgBurn" instead. It's lightweight, quick, and easy to use. It's also open source, so it's 100% free!

One could still use Nero Lite for example.
It contains what you need without the bloat and gets the job done.
Sadly, last time I used it, it would appear that the install file was corrupted and only seldom wanted to install on Vista, while vehemently refusing to do so on Win 7.

I use "Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 Advanced" since it's free and meets my needs.

Come to think of it, I'm switching to open source programs more and more, and that's a good thing because they are just as good (if not better) like most 'quality' paid programs.

im also using ashampoo as nero fails almost every time for me lately. it goes through the motions of burning and says its completed but nothing is ever on the disk. then use ashampoo and it burns quicker and works every time.

Deks, as soon as I saw the thread title, I thought the same as you.
    For those who don't know:
Nero 8 micro installs in seconds and it burns anything you need. Basically you get Nero Burning ROM and Nero Express.
The .exe was only about 20mb I think
