Both pcs see eachother and it looks like my vista pc can connect to my windows 8 pc but when i try to connect to the vista pc through my windows 8 it keeps asking me for network credentials. I have put my windows password in it but it doesnt go through, it just says that the password is wrong. I dont understand what password i'm supposed to use?

For name it uses the name of my windows 8 machine then a backslash and the name of my vista machine, then the password which is a mystery.

Anybody know what i need to do in order to establish my connection here?

It depends on your file sharing settings. If it's through password protected sharing, you'll have to input the username and password for a user on that computer that has the permissions to access whatever files you want to share. Note that you may also have to enable some folders to be shared manually depending again on sharing settings and folder location.

It's been forever since I set password protected sharing on my desktop that I can't remember all the steps I did. However, it talks perfectly well to my Windows 8 and Windows 7 computers (it's running 7 by the way).

    Thanks

Well i may have gotten alittle further in trying to link the two, it said I need to give my windows 8 pc permission before i can access the vista pc. This must be done on the vista pc somwhow.

AFAIK...they both need to be on the same Homegroup for you to begin to even access from one computer to the other. If you don't have that setup correctly that is why your seeing what it is saying it needs network credentials and password login. So you need to go back and check both network settings and see what each is set at and make one with Homegroup setup and set the password and then the other will login with the Homegroup password and that will allow sharing of folder and files.

Which computer is hosting the Public folder. And I think here you seriously need of finding a Windows O/S book of 8.1/Vista and read up on network setup in those to do what your doing as it seems like your very unfamiliar with all the ends and outs of networking. IMHO

Both pc's have a public folder. Apparently there is no way to keep the public folder from being accessed by the guest account on the vista pc.

So the only way I can solve this is by not keeping transferred files in the public folder.

Step 1: Transfer files to public folder on vista machine

Step 2: Move those files out of the public folder so they are not shared withe the guest account

    thanks for the help

You should be able to disable the guest account.
