Anyone know if it is possible to download a free version of Microsoft Office anywhere? Or even just Word. I could have bought it with the laptop for £40 but decided against as i figured it may well have been a rip-off.

You can always try a FOSS alternative, such as LibreOffice or OpenOffice. Alternatively, you can do what I do and use Office on SkyDrive.
-
When you say a "free version", are you talking about a pirated copy or like a trial download?
-
Unless you really need Publisher or Outlook, you should be able to use OpenOffice just fine. Been using it for years.

I've downloaded Open Office, but im trying to download a word document from a website and it opens in Word Pad. When I try to find Open Office Writer, I can't seem to find it. I know it's downloaded fine, I just can't find it in the folder. Any ideas?

Start -> Programs -> OpenOffice -> Writer.
And after it installs it should make a quickstart thing appear at start so just go to your taskbar, expand where your Windows notifications are, it should be a blue circle and right click and hit Writer,
Alternatively go to Start -> Default Programs -> Set Default Program. Find Writer and click "Set this program as default". -
Don't use openoffice, use LibreOffice. All the linux distros are even using Libre now.

If you ever purchased Microsoft Office, it comes with three licenses, so you can install it on three systems. Just in case you ever bought a copy.
-
Not all retail versions of MS Office come with three licenses; only the Family Packs have three licenses.

Yes, but the licenses are re-usable as long as they are installed on the allowed amount of computers. Office Academic comes with two licenses, but you can transfer them to other computers as long as you remove it from the older computers before. Given how the OP worded his post, i doubt that it is a OEM license.
