I want to be able to click on a bookmark from the side bar, then the side bar closes. Presently:

In FF, the page changes but the sidebar remains open
In IE7, the page changes and the sidebar closes automatically when the favourite is selected.

    Any extension im missing?

Uh, I thought the point in a sidebar was that it stayed open. Unlike the Bookmarks menu, which, like any other menu, closes when you've clicked on an option.

Yeah, I prefer to just use the bookmark toolbar..

But, you could try this extension.
I havn't tried it, but it looks like it might do what you're lookin for.

isn't the first click on the favourites button basically the same as a menu? then the second click pastes it as a sidebar which sticks around?

No, FF doesn't can't do that, yet. What you could do, though, especially if you have a widescreen laptop, is to just open your browser wider and leave the sidebar on. I find that pretty handy, myself, and it ends up the same.
