Perfectly ok. It won't get too hot (if at all) in sleep mode.

(Wrong board, though I'm not sure where is correct. Lenovo?)

I don't know, if there are any buggy drivers it can come randomly out of sleep and if the notebook heats up it can start a fire. If you put it in a bag, rather go with Hibernate, safe. My notebook once had a problem that has only happened 2-3 times where you would shut the notebook down and it would turn on again after a few seconds, of course I had already packed it away in my bag, if it didn't have such loud fans I don't know what would of happened. If I weren't so lazy, I would remove the battery ever time I put it away.

^ I was about to say this... simply because I have seen quiet a few reports / posts about notebook' coming out of sleep whenever it feels like (not specifically the thinkpads though, many models)... so i don't know if this would be a good idea. Though may be if the OP is sure about his/her notebook sleeping until the owner wakes it up, I think may be its fine then.

I think as long as you ensure your notebook is in sleep mode before you put it in the notebook sleeve, it is safe to do so. This is ideal to do if you're not going to use it for a few minutes to hours.

I don't get it, though. Why wouldn't one just turn his or her computer off and then pack it up? Even if you'll only be traveling a short distance, isn't it safer to just have it turned completely off during transport?

sometimes when I go to class i push the button so it goes to a low power state so I quickly boot up when I get to class cause I usually want to start working very quickly, thats my reason at least.

no, i rarely shut it down. worse comes to worse i'll Hibernate it. its the SAME AS OFF, except an image your desktop is saved to the hard drive prior to powering down.

in sleep mode, i dont hear any fan or feel any air being blown out of the exhaust area. also in sleep mode, i dont think the hard drive is spinning so letting the laptop bounce around in my bag is fine..

i've never seen my laptop power on by except after i make sure its fully in sleep mode (or hibernate mode)

Except for the risk of accidentally powering up (which has happened to me with a DELL M1210) I think it is ok.

    But I never do that.

Because it takes forever to boot up...

If you know you are only going a short distance, where even if the machine accidentally powers up it won't be confined in the bag long enough to really start to heat up, then you are fine in sleep mode. This sounds like the case of running between classes. Or in my case the 15 minute drive from home to office. But if there is any chance that the machine could be running in the bag unnoticed for a hour or more, I would hibernate it.

There are ways to wake it up.

By default, Vista out of the box does not automatically wake the computer under any circumstances. So unless you've been playing with the Task scheduler, then you will be ok.

A computer in sleep is essentially just as safe for travel as a computer that is off. Everything is shut off except for the memory.

Shutting down and booting up once eats up more battery than a whole day of sleep.

I agree. It doesn't take much to turn the computer back on. Hell, you could even put it in Hibernate and still resume where you left off when needed.

I know I can't do this with my Alienware, even in sleep mode. My baby's put's out some ridiculous amounts of heat sometimes. :p

For anyone who has done a clean install, I agree with you. However there are several reports here of preinstalled instances of Vista waking themselves up, even out of sleep mode. These reports are ONLY on machines that have a BIOS feature that supports this and in that case Vista was configured to wake up the machine to run Windows Update. The task scheduler is smart enough (or in the case of laptops with this BIOS wake up feature STUPID enough) to use the feature to wake the machine at 3:00 AM to run Windows update. The scary part is that when the task scheduler uses the BIOS wakeup, it doesn't take into account that the laptop might be in someone's bag at 3:00 AM!!

I've been doing this for 10 years on various notebooks. There is nothing to worry about. The harddrive, screen and fan is turned off and the only thing powered is the RAM.

i don't think it would heat up so much that it would catch fire in half an hour during transport

I do this quite often... I close the lid and make sure its in sleep, then toss it into my bag and go to class! less that 1% of the batt consumed on the short walk. I did have it wake up a few times on me (closing the lid then unplugging my mouse) and it was somewhat warm when i pulled my laptop out but I always put it in my bag with the side vent facing up.
