For some reason my vista laptop is only showing it has one core now but under device manager it shows both. Anyone have a fix?
-
Is it showing only one core in a sidebar app, or in BIOS?
-
Thanks but I was able to fix it.
-
How were you able to fix it? What was the originating problem?
-
I think he means System Properties.
-
Okay, i think he was too. But i still wonder how it could only show 1 core.
-
It was where I had messed with the advanced boot process the other day to determine whether it boots faster with the 1 or 2 processor checked and somehow I had only 1 checked and did not have the check box checked where it says number of processors.

Oh, i see. That explains it, because i was really wondering how that could happen.
-
BTW The boot time is slightly faster with 2 processors selected, and by default only 1 is selected. I did 3 boot ups with 1 processor selected and the same for 2 and on a average it was 6 seconds faster with 2 selected.
-
Oh really? Could you provide an explanation on how to enable 2 cores so i can test it out for flamenko's thread?
-
open run type msconfig then enter
click BOOT tab
click advanced options
under where it says number of processors click the drop box and select 2
click OK
Click apply

Thanks tango, i've altered a few things about your tweak and it has decreased my system startup by about 20 seconds.
-
What did you alter?
-
The amount of memory startup is allowed to use by checking the box beside the number of processes box.
-
Wouldn't you want startup to be allowed to use all available memory you have?
-
That's what i do, i allow them to use all the memory available. Before it wasn't allowed to do that. Now it is.
-
Oh mine was already set at 2048, anyways glad yhis post helped you out with a faster bootup.
-
But i see the box next to the amount of processors is unchecked.
How is that?
-
That pic was from earlier when I was trying different things, I now have it set back to defualt on the maximum memory which is 2048.
-
Your lucky because your memory isn't shared and you probably have a faster startup because mine is only 1.9GB.

I am pretty sure those settings are ONLY for multiprocessor motherboards not multicore cpu's. Both cores are utilized during the boot process by default and if you dont touch the memory number the boot process will automatically use all available memory. That section is to PREVENT it from using all available memory. Typically this is for servers with more than one CPU where you want to set aside a certain number of processors and a certain amount of memory for some speiclaized use AFTER the boot process is finished.
