anyone mention opera, i like it even better than firefox, its got everything that firefox does, its got a built in bit torrent which i really dont use much but its there to use,the one thing i like the most is the "speak"option where it can read webpages to you and if you have a microphone you can tell it to read a webpage, its got a option where you can choose to turn off the pictures and i believe im not sure so dont take this as fact but i think you can save jpegs just by drag and drop.

I've been using opera for more than 1 year now but I never knew it can read webpages. How do you enable it?

highlight some text on a webpage and right-click. select 'speak' and it will prompt you to download the Voice codec. after you download it, it will have further instructions on how to use it and configure later.

"Does everything Firefox does"? That's a claim I'm a bit curious about.

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the actual Firefox browser. It's starting to get awfully bloated and unstable. What makes me use it is the extensions. Does Opera have something similar? (And is it as powerful as FF extensions, is it as widely used, are there as many to choose from)

As far as I know though, Opera is faster and renders pages better, so I'd be happy to switch to it. But not if it means I have to give up on all the little conveniences I can get in Firefox through extensions.

it has everything you find in firefox but its not as slow its got widgets you can download as well, it as more options in it aswell, you can take notes in it like if you want to copy a quote in a web page or a paragraph or whatever you can copy it and paste it in the notes in the opera browser its got tabbed browsering, zoom in and zoom out, its the perfect browser i think anyway.

it doesnt have extentions but with so much stuff it already comes with you shouldnt need anything extra

Well, as I said I *do* need something extra.

I don't care about zooming in, I don't care about it reading webpages out loud. And I don't care about a built-in notepad, when Windows also comes with an excellent notepad. What I do care about is the functionality I use in Firefox, which comes from extensions.

Check the firefox thread, and tell me if Opera can do what all those extensions do. If it can, I'll switch immediately. If it can't, you shouldn't pretend that "it does everything Firefox does", because, well, it obviously doesn't.

People using IE tend to say you don't need tabbed browsing. Opera users say you don't need extensions.

I say I need both. If Firefox is the only browser that can deliver that, I guess I'm stuck with it. If Opera can do the same, I'd be happy to switch.

Oooh, like every browser since, uh, the first browser ever, has had?
    Very impressive. ;)

I can do that in Firefox too. :)

first i havent had firefox in awhile since i switched to opera i didnt want to go back, its personal preference really its got the same if not better secruity.
what exactly do you need as far as extentions. me personally id rather not waste the time downloading extentions if its got pretty much everything i want. you can stay with firefox if you want but if you want all the features opera has here it is.

    BitTorrent
You don't need a separate BitTorrent application to download large files. Simply click a torrent link and start the download.

    Content blocker
Remove ads or images - it's up to you. Right-click (CTRL-click on the Mac) on the Web page and choose "Block content".

    Add your favorite search engines
Right-click on the site's search field and select "Create search" from the menu

    Thumbnail preview
It is easy to have many tabs open at once in Opera. But exactly which tab had that video you wanted? Hover your mouse on any tab to see a thumbnail preview.

    Site preferences
Want to view a site in a different way or deny certain cookies? Want to block pop-ups on certain sites only? Right click and select "Edit site preferences".

    Widgets
Small Web applications (multimedia, newsfeeds, games and more) that make your desktop experience more fun. Use the Widgets menu to discover new widgets and access your favorites.

    Improved rich text editing
Use advanced text editing features for today's most popular Web applications.

    Transfer manager
View download progress and access all your downloads from one simple transfer manager window.

    Tabbed browsing
Surf the Web easier and faster by opening multiple Web pages within the same application window.

    Password manager
The password manager remembers your usernames and passwords so you will not have to. (its alittle more than that if you have microphone you can tell it to enter your password without touching the keyboard)

    Integrated search
Search Google, eBay, Amazon and more with our integrated search field. You can also search directly in the address field using keywords (for example "g" for Google).

    Pop-up blocking
Opera lets you control whether to block all pop-ups, or open only the ones that you have requested.

    Mouse gestures
Opera supports mouse gestures, allowing you to perform certain movements with the mouse to access commonly used features.

    Fast Forward
Fast Forward will detect the most likely "next page" link and greatly simplify navigation in multi-page documents such as search results and image galleries

    Sessions
Save a collection of open tabs as a session, for later retrieval, or start with the pages you had open when Opera was last closed.

    Quick preferences
Pressing F12 displays the 'Quick preferences' menu to easily switch settings such as pop-up and cookie preferences and more.

    Notes
Notes can be kept in conjunction with a Web site you want to refer to later, or remind you of any particular information you may like to review again

    Voice
The voice feature allows you to control Opera's interface by talking and to have documents read aloud. Voice is currently offered in English and runs on Windows 2000 and XP.

    Keyboard Shortcuts
Keyboard shortcuts - like mouse gestures - make your browsing faster and more efficient. Read more about all the keyboard shortcuts in Opera.

    Trash can
If you accidentally close a tab, you can retrieve it from the trash can. This also works for blocked pop-ups that you may want.

    Security bar
Opera displays security information inside the address field. The padlock icon indicates the level of security present on a site.

    Encryption
Opera supports Secure Socket Layer (SSL) version 3, and TLS 1.0 and 1.1. Opera supports 256-bit encryption, the strongest standard encryption for the Web.

    Delete private data
You can clear the history and cache when exiting, to protect your privacy. Private data can easily be erased at any time by going to Tools > Delete private data.

    Cookie control
You have detailed control of what cookies to accept and reject, including different setups for different servers.

    Opera mail
Our built-in POP/IMAP E-mail client is a combined e-mail program, news reader, mailing list organizer and RSS/Atom newsfeed reader.

    IRC chat
Communicate with people all over the world using Opera's IRC chat client. Chat privately or in rooms, or share files with your friends and family.

    Drag and drop
Add, remove or rearrange buttons, search fields and toolbars. Go to Tools > Appearance.

    Skins
Skins can give your browser the look you want. Make the browser your own by giving it the icons, colors and style of your choice.

    Language
Opera is translated into a multitude of languages, and the language can be changed on the fly. Go to Tools > Preferences > General.

    Zoom
You can zoom the contents of any Web page from 20%-1000% using the zoom dropdown or the + and - keys.

    Text size and colors
You can change text size and color, link styling or background color to your liking in Tools > Preferences > Web pages.

    User style sheets
Opera comes with a set of ready-made style sheets, including accessibility style.

    Standards support
We take pride in supporting all major Web standards currently in use, including CSS 2.1, XHTML 1.1, HTML 4.01, WML 2.0, ECMAScript, DOM 2 and SVG 1.1 basic.

    Small-screen mode
When displaying a page in small-screen mode (Shift+F11) you can see how it will look on a mobile phone or other small-screen device running Opera.

    Validate code
You can validate the HTML code of any Web page by pressing Ctrl+Alt+V.

    Toggle graphics and style sheets
Graphics and style sheets can be toggled on/off via our toolbars and shortcuts.

    Info panel
The Info panel shows details about the currently open page such as MIME type, page size, character encoding and more.

    Reload from cache
Edit the source of any open Web page and view the result instantly. Go to Tools > Advanced.

    Full-screen mode
The F11 key toggles Opera's projection mode, using the whole screen for browsing and, if a projection style sheet is present, displays 'slides' suitable for presentation.

    Kiosk mode
Opera supports kiosk mode - a lock-down mode in which the browser can be used for unattended computers in public places.

there you go all the features of opera.

i think the only thing firefox has that opera doesnt is the extensions,

opera is also faster in tests and is the only browser from IE7, FF 2 and opera 9 to perform the acid2 test properly

oh and no memory leak lol

I do prefer Opera if I'm just browsin for a little while, but I've come to rely on a bunch of extensions for a better overall experience.

I only use Firefox on my good computer though; my old one is too slow for it (or even Opera for that matter), usin K-Ninja on that one.

But; for most people, I agree, Opera is usually better; it's alot less work to get it the way you want anyway, and it doesnt need alot of tweaking to get running fast (though on a decently modern comp, Firefox is plenty fast enough). It comes with most handy add-ons out of the box; you get the added convenience without hunting through hundreds of extensions. It is a very nice browser, but it's not for me.

Just glancing through that plugin list reveals that Opera has quite a number of those features right out of the box, without the need for extensions. Opera also supports GreaseMonkey-like script using UserJS. I'm pretty sure more of those "missing" features can be added using UserJS and/or plugins.

I love the "Fit to width", "Show images/ No images/ Cached images", and the "Author mode/ User Mode" buttons. I don't want to spend time looking for extensions/settings in firefox to be able to have these functions.

The other thing about Firefox is that pop-ups are starting to get through when i visit some websites (wink wink :p).
