Different OS meansnew installation - if you have your files on partition D you could instal Windows 7 on partition C and the files would stay - if you instal on the same partition as your files they'll be removed (could be recovered but there is no guarantee)

But: if you do something like installing a new OS, you should have your files on a backup medium outside the HDD you are installing on - just in case something goes wrong.

As long as your files are on a different partition than the one on which Windows 7 will be installed, you'd be fine. How many partitions do you have now?

If it's 2 (or more), move your files to the partition(s) which do not have Vista (or on which you won't be installing Windows 7). If it's 1, then create a new partition, move over your data to the new partition, and install Windows 7.
