You can push ALT 164 and get an n with a tilda over it on a laptop as well.

I don't know what OS you are using, but on mine, XP Pro, you hit Alt + 0241 to get the lower case n with the tilda. Worked fine for me. I don't know what sound you are refering to when pressing the Alt + 164. I turn off most sounds on my pcs. They drive me mental like the one when hit on a link in Internet Explorer and it makes that clicking noise. You can do that in Crontol Panel. Good Luck.

On a normal computer you must use the number pad to achieve the "ALT-Number" special characters. The same is true on a notebook.

Most notebooks have a "Pad Lock" function that converts the following keys into a number pad:
    789UIOJKLM(on my laptop)

You must enable this "Pad Lock" feature so that you can hold ALT and press "jou"(on my laptop anyway) for example to achieved alt-164(ñ).

    Hope this helps.

look for a button (probably upper left hand part of keyboard) that says "Num Lock" it will aslo prolly be in a different color, then look on your keyboard, there should be numbers next to the letters in the same color as the num lock key.
