I'm trying to reformat my friend's toshiba a100 laptop. Its a core duo 1.6ghz, 1gb ram, 100gig hd, internal 8xDVD/24XCD optical drive setup.

I've already deleted the previous partitions, and I'm trying to install Windows XP sp 2 professional edition. It's already been 4 hours and its still at the format part (39%).

Is this normal? How long is a reformat on a 100gig hd supposed to take?

ps. It only takes me 1 hour to do a complete reformat on my pentium 3 computer.

that's very strange my 80gig will not take even 1 minute in reformat. what did you do? how did you reformat? when you are reformatting as well as reformatting i suggest you choose the option "ntfs (quick)."

I chose the ntfs 'normal', not 'quick' reformat

Use NTFS quick. that i think is recommended when you're reformatting and installing a fresh copy of windows. no wonder it is taking you hours just to reformat.....

thanks a lot for your help. Quick format really sped up the process. I finished the entire format process in 30minutes.
