yes but we need to know the basics first

    what is your antivirus
when did you relieze the msconfig was not working
whatr were you doing at the time
is there any other problems with it
did you recently tweak or change some hardware
did some one look at your computer before
    what did you recently install
    what is your spyware

and the main question what starts up with your computer

note: try it in safe mode
and you can also use windows defender to disable you programs

ok try it in safe mode before the microsoft logo loads

press f8 until you see some choices you see
and enter safe mode and try msconfig

You know MSconfig is obsolete on Vista. Use the Windows defender startup panel.

We are in the year 2008 my friends. MSConfig is soooo 90's.

When it comes to looking at startup programs, Windows defender's Software Explorer is where it is at. You can see much more about each program, including how it was installed, where it starts up from, etc....

If you are looking to shut off services, well, you could use ..... services.msc

Now if you are still in XP, then you have little choice. I DO like the updated version of MSConfig they released.

System Restore to an earlier restore point. Choose a restore point from a time when it was working.

LOL... Yeah I prefer to use Defender's Software Explorer for this these days.

    True.

You can download Defender for free for XP... and I think you can use Software Explorer to manage your startup programs there too. I'm not 100% sure though.

Maybe the system files are corrupted? You can type sfc /VERIFYONLY to scan the integrity of all protected files first. No repair operation is performed.

When you open up the console (cmd), you have to elevate it to Admin privileges. Open the run dialog, type cmd, and hit Ctrl+shift+Enter.

    /facepalm

Not from the run dialog. You can't elevate from the run dialog .

From vista's start menu, you can type "cmd" then CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.

No, I knew you could run command prompt as admin. But I always did it by right-clicking, then Run as Admin... I didn't know about the ctrl-shift-enter way.
