do you have uac on
-
yes
************(filler) -
i tried turning it off and i'm still getting the same error message. is there a program on my computer that could be causing msconfig to not work
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
yes but we need to know the basics first
what is your antivirus
when did you relieze the msconfig was not working
whatr were you doing at the time
is there any other problems with it
did you recently tweak or change some hardware
did some one look at your computer before
what did you recently install
what is your spyware
and the main question what starts up with your computer
note: try it in safe mode
and you can also use windows defender to disable you programs -
I have Antivir
this is the first time its happened
no other programs with it
i didn't change any hardware
noone looked at my computer
i had been trying to use a few programs to get my cd burner to burn vcd's..none of them wanted to burn the vcd's right so i uninstalled them. i had avi2dvd and the program from cucusoft i also uninstalled divx and xvid b/c i already had klite codec pack on here. -

ok try it in safe mode before the microsoft logo loads
press f8 until you see some choices you see
and enter safe mode and try msconfig -
i had tried that and it still won't work
i also tried system restore after that and that didn't work either
i'll start msconfig and after a second it gives me that error message... -
You know MSconfig is obsolete on Vista. Use the Windows defender startup panel.
-
but there's a lot more in msconfig you can do than on the windows defender...i have always used msconfig and this is the first time it has happened...and how do you know its obsolete?
-
We are in the year 2008 my friends. MSConfig is soooo 90's.
When it comes to looking at startup programs, Windows defender's Software Explorer is where it is at. You can see much more about each program, including how it was installed, where it starts up from, etc....
If you are looking to shut off services, well, you could use ..... services.msc
Now if you are still in XP, then you have little choice. I DO like the updated version of MSConfig they released. -

Try sfc /scannow in the command prompt?
-
just wondering if anybody actually knows what could be causing this problem and how to fix this.
i have tried searching the net but i can't find anything -
Maybe the system files are corrupted? You can type sfc /VERIFYONLY to scan the integrity of all protected files first. No repair operation is performed.
-
i do that and all i get is this "you must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility
-
When you open up the console (cmd), you have to elevate it to Admin privileges. Open the run dialog, type cmd, and hit Ctrl+shift+Enter.
-
still getting the same thing.
-
Not from the run dialog. You can't elevate from the run dialog .
From vista's start menu, you can type "cmd" then CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER. -
-
yeah it is handy. The title bar even says "Administrator." Makes you feel important.
-
I'm guessing you can type any DOS comand and use the ctrl-shift-enter, right?
-
did what u said in the last post surf--got the sfc to work. Thanks
-
-
Are both the same?
-
-
.. Right-click, then run as Admin... and the Ctrl-Shift-Enter way.
-
Oh yeah, they are the same
they both elevate a program.
problem in Vista
