    friends,

i'm new to winXP, according to the statement on the website that i'd need to register online when first using winXP. is this step necessary for me, even though this winXP comes with the notebook i'm purchasing? if yes, does anyone ever experience any problem registering online? thanks for the advise.

    rgds,

Product Registration is completely voluntary. If you register online with Microsoft, they can notify you of new products, product updates, events, promotions, and special offers you may find of interest. See link:

Yes, registration is voluntary, but authorization with a proper key is not.

If you don't activate you copy of Windows XP with Microsoft, after 30 days it'll lock you out of the OS forcing you to activate. If you don't activate still, then you can't use it, and there's no way around it.

If the OS came with the notebook and was pre-installed, usually it's a VLK version and therefore doesn't need be activated. If it's a retail version you bought from a store, it will require activation.

Thanks for the information. Btw, how do I confirm if the OS is a VLK version or not?
    <hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>

Well, if you get no activation popup on the bottom right corner of your screen, then you should be fine. It'll give you a reminder in a few days/weeks. Otherwise, you could just reload the OS that came with the system using the recovery CD's, if it asks you to Activate, then you know it's not a VLK. Usually if the OS comes with the system, you should not have to do anything other than use it. As long as the OS that came with the system is the same as the COA (Certificate of Authenticity) label on the underside, you're fine, don't worry.
