I try to reinstall a fresh copy of windows XP on my new tecra M3. The install goes well, but after when i first boot to windows it detects new hardware and ask me to reboot my system, which i do for the first couple of times it asks me that right after restart. But then there seems no end to this and i go check in device manager and nothing seems to change and it will always keep asking me to reboot my computer because it has installed new hardware.
This is extremely frustrating. Anyone have any idea why this is and how to deal with it? Does it happen to anyone else doing a fresh install? I know on my hp nc6230 there was no such problem when i did a fresh install

have you installed your drivers? The new hardware probably requires a driver and its not locating it on your drive.

Yeah, i went through all the drivers for the devices that were listed on my computer, but didn't reinstall all the crapware that came shipped with the laptop (or else i'd have just kep the factory image).
Even after that, when there was no more yellow question marks on any unknown devices in device manager, it still claims to find new hardware and install their drivers and ask me if i wanted to reboot.

I tried reinstalling with my brother's copy of SP1 and it doesn't have this problem. This is odd.

Did you try Add/Remove hardware, then use Windows update to look for driver. If that fails, there should be an option to disable device.

The problem is that i don't know WHICH device windows is detecting. Even when no unknow device shows up in device manager, it still does that to me.

****, i hate toshiba for not providing a copy of the OS so that we can fresh install. If they did that, they could have optimized windows to recognize everything in the first place.

Don't bother with the Windows Recovery CD. Since you have an original MS COA License under your unit, you're technically allowed yo use any copy of XP on your system (as long as it's the same, XP Pro COA = XP Pro OS). Just stick with your brother's XP SP1 and you should be fine. It probably has something to do with the tweaks/extra software they loaded that's casuing the problem.

I'm not sure but i think the problem is that i made two partitions visible to XP after installation. But how to fix it, i still have no idea. So i'll try to install XP with both those partitions visible before the actual install.

Having multiple partitions active (visible) during install should not cause any problems. A lot of users have multiple partitions when installing the OS. Since it doesn't happen when using your brother's OS CD, it's limited to the Toshiba recovery CD's. It's probably finding a change in either hardware/firmware(BIOS) and therefore it'll have a hard time finding the drivers.

As I stated before, just use your brother's OS CD since it seems to work fine using this version. Since this does work fine, you know it has something to do with Toshiba's drivers/recovery CD's.
