I have a dell vostro 1000 with XP. a couple days ago it started acting funny, everything i would type would come up one letter per second. i ran virus scan, spyware scan, cleaned the hard disc, defraged, and nothing helped. I've had the laptop for about a year and a half, figured it wouldnt hurt to re-install. So I re-installed last night, but i have a couple issues.

the biggest being that my screen is stretched from left to right. say i'm looking at a picture, everyone looks fatter than they are. i've went through the display settings 20 times, and nothing is helping. i'm fairly positive all the drivers are installed, so i'm at a loss.

the other issue is when i try to scroll down, whether it be the touchpad or i use the scroll bar on the right of the screen, it doesnt scroll down smoothly. it like skips and jumps depending on how fast i'm trying to scroll, either a like 1/4 page or sometimes several pages at a time. it used to just scroll smoothly, no matter how fast it would still show what i'm scrolling over. it does this in both IE and firefox.

i love you guys, you always fix my clueless-ness

so i did some more digging, went into device manager and realized that i dont have a video driver installed. it's saying video controller (vga compatable), but i dont know how to tell what video driver i have. it's an ATI, and my xp is the 64bit version. other than that, i dont know which driver to try and download from the ati website. there's one available on my drivers cd, but its the wrong one. i remember when i ordered the computer, i opted for an upgraded video card.

so, anyone have any clues how i can tell what video card i have?

    ATI Radeon® Xpress 1150 256MB HyperMemory™ (integrated)

i tried downloading the driver from the amd website, but it didnt do anything. the device manager is still showing that i'm missing that driver.

sa-weeeet. took me a couple hours of messin around with it, but i finally got it

but now, the original problem is back, the whole reason why i re-installed. i start typing in a dialog box, and its slow, like 1 letter per second. i let it sit for 2 seconds, and everything shows up just fine as i type it. then, sometimes as i'm typing along and its showing up fine, it'll just slow down again.

it wasnt doing this at all before i installed the driver, so now its got me worried thinking my motherboard might be on the way out the door or something, since its an integrated card.

anyone heard of this happening before?
