I've got a Compal JFT00 here (it's for my mom), and while she's all excited about the small size (12.1") for travel, when she's got it home, wants to hook it up to her big LCD monitor.
So, I try hooking up a spare monitor (this laptop has the intel x3100 integrated gpu). First thing I notice is, the laptop resolution has changed (on it's own) from 1280x800 to 1024x768, and same for the external, leaving both looking rather distorted.
So, I forced the laptop's display back to 1280x800, and then the external went black (while the display-properties in Windows [xp] indicate it's trying to control the monitor with 640x480, 8bit color, and I can't seem to make any change 'stick').
What am I doing wrong? This machine has XP-Pro, 2GB of ram, and the integrated gpu...

never mind...
I just noticed the 'Graphics Properties' and 'Graphics Options' menu items that pops up when I right click on the desktop. Display Properties on it's own doesn't quite cut it, but the others seem like the way to go... -
Have you checked the Extend display in Display settings? If you are trying to clone, then perhaps the resolution is incompatible with your external display. Which external display are you using?

It depends on the external monitor.
What`s its max resolution at the moment?
