What processes on a thinkpad Ibm T43p are really needed? I have about 60 processes.

Well there should only be 2-4 services specifically for the Thinkpad. The rest are Windows XP services. And those you can find information guides online pretty easily. PCStats.com is a good place to start. You could also take a trip to Barns & Noble and read ExtremeTech: Hacking Windows XP. None of the tips are really ground breaking or new, but unlike some tweak websites, they researched their tips and everything is really easy to understand. I even found a few tweaks (er tips) I didn't even think about.

When you start disabling services, make sure you know what exactly that service does. If in doubt, don't disable just set it to manual. Other things you'll want to think about doing is disabling all unneeded hardware (one of extreme tech's tips). Thinks worth turning off include firewire (which we don't have on our thinkpads), card slots, 56k modem, bluetooth, network card, touchpad, etc. As well as the annonying XP startup and shutdown sounds and even the XP Pro boot GUI.

Also think about turning off the wallpaper or opening up the image in your favorite image editor and resize & compress it to fit your exact screen. You can also remove all the unneeded fonts from your system. Then go into your registry and change the 'time to shut non-responding programs' from the default 20 seconds to 2 seconds.

I'm really happy with the performance that I got. Before the tweaks, if I ran Prime95 I'd get an error after about 10 mins. Now I can run it all day without error. So it actually improved system stability as well as make my computer noticebly quicker. If your really anal about tweaking, think about undervolting your CPU. I didn't think it would make a difference because my temps are low to begin with but my temps average 5-8 degrees lower. Some T43P users report 10* temp drops.

Whatever you do, have fun and try not to break anything.
