sorry if this has been posted before

i want to copy my dvds that i have to my hard drive so that i don't have to have the disc with me all the time.

i have dvd decrytor which just removes the copy right on the disc files and copies them to the disk dive

what out there will convert videoets into a single mpeg file or equivailent.
or a program that can run the videoets...

any suggestions if there is any thing free the would be great by i would spend a little money if it is worth it...

note* i only what them on my harddive i am NOT putting any of this on bittorents or p2p.

    any help would great!

Check out this review on #1 DVD Ripper.... I've been using it for several months, for this purpose exactly (to have movies on my hard drive, so when I travel I can watch them, and don't need to remember to bring along the DVD).

Also, it reduces the size, so you don't fill up your hard drive faster then necessary, but retains excellent image quality!

AVI files are raw video files. MPG/MPEG files are encoded and compressed. AVI files are not smaller than MPG/MPEG files. DivX is a pretty good codec that drastically reduces video file size due to it's compression algorithm. There are a ton of utilities that will convert from AVI to DivX.

DVDShrink may do what you want. I bought Slysoft's AnyDVD/CloneDVD/CloneDVD Mobile suite which does all of this and more. It costs money and frankly, the CloneDVD Mobile could use some more configuration options, but it is very easy to use.

Actually, AVI is a container file format. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVI

I doubt you'll find the Slysoft products available in stores. In fact, most such products are not sold in the U.S.

Slysoft Products are only for download, but the ease of use and the continual updates are worth the money spent.

google a program called Super!, it can handle almost any of your video formats and convert them to pretty much anything else.

MediaCoder is excellent as well (and open source).
The GUI is a tad complicated though.

AVI files are encoded and de-coded via your player if compressed. Thats why DiVX compressed video are the .avi format. MPG/MPEG can be a raw video format as well.
