hello!
im in the bushes of africa here, and i am using gprs to access the net, and i get charged per kb of data. i want to minimize my laptop's access to net as much as possible. how do i find out which programs are accessing the net? even though i'm not doing anything, i can see data being transmitted to/from my laptop when i am connected.
thanks.

If I were you, I'd just unplug the internet if/when you aren't using it yourself. If every kb of data costs, that's what I'd do because no computer requries the internet to function.
But for the functionality you're asking for? Check out ZoneAlarm. The free version has the ability to selectively block traffic based on the program that's asking for bandwidth. -
well i would recommend the same but if your unable to get zonealarm i would say set the windows firewall to maximum and then make the necessary tweaks in the exceptions tab

mostly i use the internet for YM, keeping in touch with friends and families to keep from going insane here.. but the problem is, even when YM is the only program running, i see lots of data being transmitted and recieved. i already have the windows update turned off, but still something is still accessing the net.
ill try the firewall. thanks! -

Some programs check for Updates. You might want to disable that.

I second the ZoneAlarm idea. It gives you a full list of applications that have access to the internet. You can then allow or deny any application access.
