Not sure about free, but MediaFour's XPlay does let you do that sort of direct drag and drop of music directly.

Someone else can definitely chime in on what the good free programs are for this.

Sell the ipod, and buy a REAL mp3 player that doesn't come with all the rest of Apple's BS. ;)

Or update your iPod using Rockbox. Extended functionality, extended codec support and most importantly, drag & drop. Been running it on my iRiver for around 12 months now and couldn't go back.

If you specifically want the functionality provided by Rockbox, sure. If not though, and you're happy with the Nano, I don't see a specific reason to do it.

dude don't listen to all the iPod haters.

I've had my iPod Video for about 4 months now and absolutely love it! wouldn't trade for anything else ;)

I use iTunes, it's not that much of a hassle, really.

Getting Rockbox installed on the iPod is definitely not for the faint of heart, but look into and see what you think. Just make sure that your specific gen of iPod is supported first. It is a very cool idea, but support for the iPod is relatively new, it was originally intended for iRiver players. I tried it and was not nearly as impressed as I thought I would be, but that could be just because it is not as well developed for other players.

Yeah, do that and get one with Plays For Sure or Zune BS instead.

You must try iShuffle. If you don't speak Spanish, you can change the site to English with the menu in the upper right corner. iShuffle is freeware, extremely easy to use, and you won't need iTunes on your computer. I use iShuffle myself and highly recommend it.

Edit: I am using iShuffle with an iPod Shuffle and don't know if it works with other iPods.

You should definately go with ephpod.. it has more options then itunes and works like a charm. i prefer the iTunes UI though.
