lately, i tried using bittorent to download some freeware applications. the problem, however, is that it doesn't seem to be downloading anything. Here's what i did to download.
first, i go to to torrent site and then download the torrent file. then open it in "bittorent". But the bittorent doesn't seem to download the file. the progress bar is red. i don't know what the problem is. btw, i waited 30 mins but still it's not working.
any idea?

most likely the file is not being seeded. Meaning that there is no one out there right now sharing the file from their own computer. This happens to all torrents because eventually the seeder(s) will take the file down, but the torrent file is still up on whatever torrent site you got it from.

Your firewall/router/ISP could be blocking the bittorrent port you're using.
-
Port blocking at the ISP level is possible, but not very likely.
Firewall or router blocking is much more likely.
Are you using straight vanilla bittorrent? or one of the much easier to use clients, like Azureus or utorrent? -
you have to change 'bittorrent' to your actual client.

BitLord... for um.... freeware

well bittorrent its self is kinda crappy now, I recommend Azureus or Bit Comet to download apps. To unblock the firewall go to "windows security center and disarm from there".
-
Utorrent is slowly but steadily becoming the most popular torrent download manager.
-
lol, do people actually torrent freeware?
-
haha... i tried to torrent 3dmark06 but no one was seeding. that **** thing is way too big.

BitTorrent is FINE, it is a perfectly good Client.
If you don't seem to download anything, it could be various problems....but the most likely is that you haven't set up BitTorrent to use the correct port.
Step 1: Disable Windows Firewall by going to Start, Control panel, and then security centre. Then click Widows Firewall undernaeath where it says "Manage security settings for.....:" Then click "off".
METHORD 1
Step 2: Depending on what router you have, type in the IP address of your router into your web browser. Go to the "virtual servers section" .
Step 3: Open up a new port. TCP (.....) what ever the port BitTorrent is using.
To find out what port BitTorrent is using, open BitTorrent, go to File and Settings. Click on the connections tab . The port number on that little box in BitTorrent and the port number in your router management console must corresponde to each other.
Step 4: Click apply changes in your web browser. the port is now opened.
METHORD 2:
If you find Steps 2-4 confusing, look at this: http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm
Step 2: Click on your router product number (usually on the underside of the router.
Step 3: Click on BitTorrent on the next page, and there will be step, by step instructions.
if no one is seeding a torrent, the you'll hardly download anything at all. So basically, the more popular a torrent and more people downloading it, your download rate will be faster. Always use popular torrents.
Be careful about downloading. Use Peer Guardian 2. A firewall designed for use with file sharing programs.

Hope this helps, Mayz -
Just a remind - keep it about legal files/programs.

sounds weird..

feel free to leave a rep point gohelet...
I might make a more detailed BitTorrent guide.... I don't know...
will it encourage more illegal file sharing...I don't want that....
