Funny you should ask, I just finished reinstalling Vista (with sp1 slipstreamed) and the Vista install took the better part of an hour.

I guess it would depend on your version of "install". Are you only counting the time that it took for the vista files to be copied from the disk? Or are you counting the partitioning phase too?

nope ..i didn't do any partitioning. right now its been on that black screen for a while after the installation completes...
well I had to use an OEM disk..my sister had premium..but the OEM disk is vista basic..i did burn a disk that allows you to choose which version you want..but that didn't seem to work either...

Yeah it shouldn't take that long.

You'll generally have to use an OEM disk for the same brand of computer. So if you're installing on a Dell, you need a Dell OEM disk. All the disks have all the Vista editions... it's your key that determines whether you can run Premium or Basic or whatever.

Anyway... you may want to just try starting over again.

There's a place in the installer where you can put in a Drivers disc. I've never done that but it might be worth trying.

Another possible thing to try is going in to BIOS and disabling nonexistent and non-essential hardware (smart card reader, WWAN, modem, serial port, etc.). Also disconnect all non-essential peripherals. You can always re-enable that stuff after installation.

That's way too long. It took me 45 minutes to clean install and some people reports around 5 hours for upgrade.
