I am thinking about doing a reinstall of vista, but would like to know if there's a way to save files from a saved game and then when i put the game back on the computer after reinstall just put the saved game files back on so that I can just start off where i left with the game.

What game is it? Some games store all of the user-specific files in C:\Users\**Your.username**\My Documents\My Games. (I believe that's the right path).
I was able to save my Oblivion saves/settings by copying the Oblivion folder from My Games when I reformatted. -
Neverwinter nights 2,
where did you copy it to -
NWN2 save files are in the Documents directory, so if you back that all up you'll have it.
-
I just saved that Oblivion folder from My Games to a flash drive, and re-copied it to the My Games folder upon re-install. You could even move it to another partition.
-
what's a good way to back up pictures and those type of files on vista?

if you want save all your "save game" files, check at your game directory/folders.
Games/war crafts/save game
most of the games have their own folder for save game files. -
Generally, I keep a second partition for saving music/pictures/movies. I think most people just use an external source, like a flash drive, hard drive or DVD for this purpose.
