i have vista, andwell im just trying to delete some files, through my program files folder.. and what im trying to delete is windows photo gallery, calander, collabration, journal, mail, nt.. and it wont let me.. it says i need permisson...
and do i really need windows defender??
any help??
-
first of all, i say, don't do that!! now that that's said... use the add/remove programs applet (whatever it's called in vista)
second, are u using an admin account, or what?
and third, at least some of those are MS, right? they tend to be somewhat unhappy about removal, if u know what i mean. -
dont do what?
and its not on the list, on the add/remove programs.. -
hmmm, ok maybe i'm a bit jumpy, lawlzy
but, what i was saying is don't just delete them. your OS may become steamed. and if it's not on the list... u remember what i said about them being unhappy?
meaning: probably needs some hacking. if ur using an admin account and permission is still denied it's probably MS's OS blocking you. so.... might need some hacking. my suggestion: google. -
in the add and remove programs.. click add or remove windows components.. some of those will be in there.
-
if I may add--don't do that!
Removing folders willy-nilly as you are doing is just plain bad thinking. Are you realliy dying for the extra 15mbs? If you don't need some basic windows programs don't use them, or maybe do a reinstall with vlite, but just deleting folders is plain crazy -
Yes.. i'll suggest don't do it as well, most of them just take up hardisk space and will not slow your computer down as most of them remain inactive.
Although i have no experience on those programs, i do know ms is good at doing "xxxx program can't be found thus xxxx program can't be run" or whatsoever. -
I'm not sure that you can remove Windows Defender in Vista. Anybody know for a fact? -
If you don't want it, I suggest disabling the system service (run "services.msc" to do this). That should prevent it from using system resources. (However, I'd only do this if you're running another antispyware program that has real-time protection.) As mentioned, it's not worth messing around to try to reclaim the 5 megabytes of disk space it uses in Program Files. In fact, I suggest you don't touch the Program Files directory at all... that's why Windows makes it a pain to mess with the files there... because it can screw things up and it's just not worth it. -
im not just deleting on the whim..i know deleting these things wouldnt really effect me any way its just windows media stuff, its not files that the system needs to have in order ro run properly.. i just never use it, and just wanted to delete it, it was just buggin me lol
but ill guess ill just keep it -
Just turn those things off in their various places and then disable the services so they're not running.
And yes, it's possible to delete Windows Defender, although in Vista it's a tedious process. I've never done it because honestly it's not worth it. Just keep those things and turn off the services if you want. -
I believe all you need to do to uninstall it is to stop the windows defender service in SERVICES, and then
WINDOWS KEY + R
type:
msiexec /uninstall windowsdefender.msi /quiet /log uninstall.log
<enter>
This assumes you haven't already messed it up by trying to manually uninstall it.
Each of the other "components" will also uninstall in this way provided there is an uninstall.log for it
It's just extremely anal to want to remove some of these things. Defender I guess I understand, since it runs a at startup, consumes resources, and occasionally goes bad, but if it is not misfiring, there are parts of it that are good to have around and while it is not as proficient at malware removal as it once was, the realtime detection is still worth having for the amount of resources it consumes,,,,
I've said it before and will say it again -- in almost all cases unused resources are wasted resources. The obsession with freeing up resources (memory, drive space) is crazy. This is not windows 98 people--xp and Vista are much better at system efficiency and optimization than all the little hacks and tweaks people keep dredging up from bygone operating systems.
I cannot tell you how many computers I fix because people feel compelled to "tweak" them -
Here's my solution:
Solution #1:
1. Download and Open WinBubble > Click "Take Ownership" > Click the Apply button
Then Right click the file > "take ownership" in the context menu...
That's it! To download WinBubble, here
Solution #2
To learn some information first (Manually do it), here (it will take time for me to write them one by one, just read the website info)
Quick tips: If you will delete them at once...try to "Take Ownership" of the folder.
Please say something if this solves your problem...I'll share it to others...thanks -
hmmm, thanks guys, i did remember about the add/remove components thing later, i'm thinking
and yeah... MS and their programs... hmmm. -
