I have just purchased a new laptop which is pre-installed with Norton and i think i get free updates for a year.

However, for work i have recently purchased a 15 user network edition of AVG and i have spare users available. Also, the laptop will often be attached to the work network since i only have 56k dialup at home, so will use the work LAN for downloads etc.

In light of the comments regarding Norton hogging resources, should i ditch it for the purchased version of AVG (which i understand is much better than AVG free edition, and has support included).

I ask before i register/update Norton because i understand from other posts it can be a pig to uninistall. Should i be able to easily remove it.

    Thanks

Typically, Norton comes with 30/60/90 day trial. Without knowing which notebook you have, it is hard to tell. I usually tell people if you want to protect yourself from Virus/Malware to one get your mail on Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc. That way if you get a virus, it is on their computer and not yours. They have people who spend 40+ hours a week looking for this stuff and they are more likely to have the latest updates. I realize this may not be an option for work. A second benefit is if you change your ISP, your email address remains the same. I personally use the free version of AVG. Second, use an internet browser that is not Internet Explorer. Most of the stuff is written for it. I use Firefox, but there are others like Opera or Netscape. Lastly, get a firewall. I use free version of ZoneAlarm. It is not as fancy as the Pro version but gets the job done and is good enough for most users. If you want to pay for one, Kerio is very good. Norton should be easy to uninstall. I think you have to take off live update first. After you are done, you may want to run RegscrubXP to clean out your registry. Good Luck.
