    Hey guys!

I just got an offer to upgrade to vista ultimate from Vista home ultimate for $60 and I was wondering if it was worth it. I was also wondering how the upgrade process worked...do I have to reformat my whole computer to upgrade? or does it work like an update? I really dont want to reformat so if I can get away with just installing it, I'd be happy.

I'd appreciate your thoughts. The price is pretty low but I'd rather upgrade only if there are substantial benefits.

I would wait for win7. The only extra ultimate has are video games, extra sounds scheme, and a Media Center to watch Tv, slideshow etc etc.

The upgrade is just that. No formatting involve.

Unless you think that the extra features in Ultimate are worth your cash, I wouldn't. Buy some RAM or something.

It will not be faster, more reliable, etc. You get to use domain networking (which if you aren't using right now you don't need) better backups (isn't worth my money) and that's really about it. The Ultimate extras never worked out to be as good as they said they would be.

The backup is useful, as it is a CompletePC backup, but there isn't really any extra protection unless you want to encrypt your drive. IMO, there isn't anything on my drive that I want to hide that badly. It would make any type of data recovery hell.

Really, if you just backup your files to DVD or something, it might take a bit longer to reinstall programs and such, but it's just time.

I think someone once posted something similar...

"If you aski whether you need it, then you possibly don't"

Which means: Unless you find something that your Vista Home Premium lacks you don't need Ultimate.

Also - do as grasshopper suggested - try to wait for Win 7 - unless you find you need one of the upgrade features earlier.

There is an extensive thread on Windows 7 in the OS section here... have a look.
