My OS seems to be a bit broke. lots of my games don't work and there a billion rundll errors on startup. Is there a way to re-install Vista without losing all the programs installed and data on the HD at the moment? Also, is SP1 worth downloading? thanks for any help

SP1 is definitely worth downloading. For your data, just copy it to an external hard drive.

I'm going to back it up before I do anything when i get hold of an external HD, but is there a process in which hopefully, if nothing goes wrong, I can just repair the errors/corrupt files or whatever is wrong and not have to "reload" data and programs.

EDIT: if it turns out I have to wipe evrything completely clean and re-install the likes of Microsoft Office, will this count as another "installation" of office from the limited number available?

    Try a repair install instead.

    +1

I am surprised you still haven't got in SP1. I would suggest you get SP1.

And then try what atbnet suggested. You can do this with the Vista DVD, boot from the DVD, and do an in-place repair. This process does not mess with your personal data or stored files. Still backup everything before you proceed just to be sure.

Going to try this out tomorrow, can anyone tell me if it does happen to uninstall microsoft office, is there anyway to keep that same installation. i.e. There's, say, 3 installs on the works disc, I've used one. If this goes wrong i there any way to keep it as one being used?
