Have you recently upgraded any drivers? If so, where did you get them from? How about installing anything new that might have had a driver with it?

That happened to me also. I reformatted my comp to 64 bit and activated vista through the internet. After a few days of updating/installing software, it wanted me to activate again, but the next time I had to call.

This has happened to me 2 times in the past with x86 Vista. I don't know what causes it, but I suspect that it is an issue with Windows itself, as license activation is not a driver component. There isn't much you can do about except reactivate Vista; putting in your key from the OEM code on your laptop may not work, as was the case with my experience. You may have to call Microsoft.

hasnt happened to me yet, but it sounds like MS is purposely doing it to authenticate your licence

It is possible that this made Vista think you put in new hardware. That's the only reason I could imagine happening.

Where did you get the drivers? From the intel site or the OEM site? You should always use the drivers from the OEM site.

An issue in the past has been that if you install drivers from intel instead of the OEM, the drivers report a different version number to Vista, which then thinks the hardware has changed, even if it didn't.

Apparently with SP1 it doesn't lock up... it just pops up nag screens. At least that's what I read.
