    I finally found a component to USB adapter that is supposed to let you record in HD. but the software is mac compatible. the hardware should work on both pc and mac. any recomendations on HD external recording software ?

    its a black magic adapter

    What do you mean record in HD? Are you talking about recording tv on your computer with a tv tuner?

    You can use TvWave it' a very cool software which you can use to record via streaming or just watch the tv channels which are integrated if not you can use also Sopcast to do that.
