Rocketdock works very well, and doesn't kill or damage your pc.

Rocketdock and Object dock are both applications that mirror the dock in OSX.

Rocketdock is free, and takes up less memory, while the premium version of objectdock costs money, takes up a bit more memory, but allows you to create as may docks as yo want

If you are looking for a dock, Rocket Dock is the best free dock at the moment... imo. Its nice having the desktop look clean of all the shortcuts.

Yes, Rocketdock is like the Mac dock. I have used it on my computer for a long time and have had no instability issues from it.

I have tried them both. They can be made to look almost identical. Both can have some "issues" with UAC in Vista. ObjectDock has the ability to do more "bells and whistles" (eye candy). RocketDock is better behaved and more reliable.

I ran RocketDock for quite awhile. There's still a page on my website describing it.

However, I went back to using a simple Windows ToolBar.

What kind of "issues" did you have with UAC in Vista? I haven't had any.

I use both rocketdock and the free object, have the same icons and dock backgrounds, I have one on the top and one on the side.
Docks are the best, end of. :p

Officially, it is not an issue with RocketDock nor with ObjectDock; it is an issue with the Stacks Docklet, which is not correctly written to separate user and system data.

Since deinstalling RocketDock (w/Stacks Docklet) and upgrading Quicken 2001 to Quicken 2009 I have turned UAC back on. Those were the only two software products I had remaining that were not "Vista w/UAC compatible". I guess I got used to how annoying UAC is from running Linux.

Right click your dock, uncheck "Lock Items"

I see. I've been using Stacks Docklet for a while and haven't had any issues, but that doesn't mean that it's problem free ;)

There are posts around about it. Here is one on this very website.

Essentially, Vista, unlike XP, is designed to separate \Program Files\, \Program Data\, and \Users\ username\AppData\. Further UAC enforces this.

The Stacks Docklet has not been updated to adhere to this enhanced design model.

Right-click on Rocketdock.exe and Run as Administrator...

Rocketdock is awesome, not only because it's nice and streamlined, but because it is completely superior to the Leopard dock.

That was insufficient to alleviate the inability to save the settings when UAC was active

With the Stacks Docklet installed and active and without having performed the "Take Ownership" hack of the folder where RocketDock/Stacks is installed?

I haven't tested it extensively, but it seems so.

I've used Stardock's ObjectDock and did try out RocketDock as well. Both look nice and do the job well, but now that Windows 7 has the new taskbar I might drop those and stick to Windows 7's super-duper-uber-tastic taskbar. :D

OK. I think you would know if it was not working. It is obvious. The customizations for the Stacks Docklet(s) do not get saved, so they have to be recreated each time.

I've seen that issue on my laptop, but my fresh desktop with the option checked seems okay... if it stops working, I'll report it. :)
