ever once in a while when i boot up windows xp, the screen resolution sets itself to the lowest setting possible. to the point that the icons are huge and everything is very pixelated. i normally have the screen set on max resolution. and the only way i can get te screen back to it's normal setting-(by me) is by restarting the computer. anyone now why this is happening and what is the permanent solution?

I have that sometimes, when i play left4dead, the resolution changes to the resolution I have used in the game and have no idea to fix it...apart from manually changing the reso back to native everytime I turn laptop on or resuming from sleep mode.

To make a partially educated guess, it sounds like perhaps your video drivers aren't loading properly at boot and the system is instead going with the standard VGA backup drivers.
The next time it happens, check in the device manager to see if there are any problems noted regarding your video adapter (discrete card or integrated graphics).
Also, check in your event logs to see if anything got logged there that relates to the video system at boot time.
Finally, you can check to see what drivers are being loaded at boot (and which are not) by adding the switch "/bootlog" (without quotation marks) to your boot.ini file. That will cause XP to generate a log of the drivers being loaded at boot time. The log file should be called ntbtlog.txt.
