Now is that number the total space on the hard drive (4gb is pretty small so I would guess no) or is how much space you have left? It could be that everytime you use windows a program is saving data or you yourself are saving data. That would mean everything is working properly if you can't find any viruses etc.

Windows will constantly accumulate junk. You can use the built in Disk cleaning utility found from the start menu > programs > accessories > system tools.
Or you can get a third party software that can do cleanups like ccleaner (as kidA mentioned) or something else. I use TuneUp utilities, it does a registry clean & defrag, temp file clean up and some other nice stuff

I would look at any running apps that you have and make sure that you're not creating log files that you don't need.

Like Qwester said. Accumulated junk, cookies, history, temp files, reg entries, etc. Try using ccleanter, which adds itself to your recycle bin's context menu and can quickly clear out this junk.

You can also try using something like FileMon to see what processes are writing to what files.

Can someone explain CCleaner to me? It seems like most of the features are things I don't want.

For instance, it will delete your web history and your autocomplete lists for urls etc. If I was trying to hide porn tracks or something it'd be great, but otherwise what useful features does it have?

cleans out temps for other applications which can take up space, all with one click

registry cleanup all in one click

probably the easiest would be the cleaning up for temp clipboard explorer, utilities (esp virus and firewall logs), and trash can all at once. it's convenient if you like to clean up c rap on your hd
