We already have a like this... it's a poll I believe.

Anyway, long-term, it'd be better to shut it down. Not going to make a huge difference, though.

It doesn't matter at all, it's your choice.

I leave my lappy on 24/7 and it never overheats, nor have any issues arisen from it.

My IBM has been running 24/7 as well. Run time right now is a little over 10 months without a single restart. I sometimes wonder if it's good for it but I guess it doesn't matter as it's a beast that is used for 24/7 downloading and uploading. Honestly I'm surprised it hasn't crashed yet...

All my other laptops I shut down when going to sleep. Standby when going to use within an hour.

If your system supports Vista's hybrid sleep, I much prefer that. Put the machine to sleep, and if you use it again within a few hours it wakes up immediately. If it's been longer, then the machine automatically switches to hibernation.

And how is this different from the settings in XP's 'Power Schemes' tab in Power Properties?

The Sleep mode in Vista will go to sleep in about 1 second and "wake up" almost as fast. Plus, it is much more relaible. In XP there were many times where my laptop should have gone into hibernate or standby and it didn't. I haven't had any surprises in Vista yet.

Also there is the issue sometimes in XP where if the notebook has been in stand bye it never comes out of it. Manual restart required.

Then how about sometimes (1 out of 150 times who knows) when you come out of stand bye it literally takes over 2 minutes for the notebook to even be responsive -- touchpad, keyboard, everything just hangs.
