    i just just got a ipod (im sooooooooo happy :) :) :))
i know that you can use dopisp(i think thats how it is spelled) for wmp11 for the ipod

and i was wondering if there is any other ones except for itunes

i hate itunes because it doubles all my songs, and uses unnessary resourses and it converts all my wma to mp3 (i know the ipod doesnt support wma's) but it doesnt even have the common courtsey to say"thank you for installing me, im itunes before i use all of youre systems resourses plus more would you choose what songs you dont want me to spend hours converting"

no it says "you better install b*tch, WHAT im on a windows pc, HOW DARE YOU, im gonna take up all your system resourses and put them to good waste, im not gonna give you the option to choose what song you want you convert, but im gonna convert your least listened to to your most, also im just gonna throwsongs on and off your ipod for not reason so when you most need it you cant have it.

(i know i sounded hash but just to make us computer personnel chuckle hehehe)

You can install sharepod, which allows you to manage your music by dragging and dropping it into the ipod.

Personally, iTunes is still the way to go (sadly) because the other ways to manage an iPod suck. Apple still continues to break iPod plugins' compatibility and send cease and desist letters to the makers.

I have iTunes installed, sans the Apple Mobile Device Support service, Apple Software Update, Apple TV service, and Quicktime (replaced with QT Lite 2.5.1). It's still slow and buggy, but it's the best solution since Apple sits on everything else.

It took a couple of days (had iTunes open about 30 minutes a day) to "determine gapless playback data" with my 2.2GB of music with my 2.66GHz Pentium 4, 512MB of RAM, and a slow 120GB 5400RPM PATA hard drive. Let it run overnight.

I agree with this, as much as I hate iTunes and the fact that the installation came with sucky QuickTime, it has the best compatibility for iPod. The problem with 3rd party is that if something goes wrong, it'll be a hell to fix.

I have been converting everything to MP3. I used WMA on my Creative player to save space. But I have had to re-rip in order to move tracks to iPod. At least MP3 can be used on any player, so next time changing formats will not be a consideration in choosing a player.

Wow, I don't think it took that long even when I added my 15 Gb or so of songs on my 2.5 GHz P4...

I've been ripping stuff in apple lossless recently :D, but I would keep it as an mp3, they wok well with more things.

QT Lite is a great replacement for Quicktime. It's got no tray icon or a need to constantly call home.

If you run Linux now you can use Amarok. However, if you don't, you can download and try out Amarok 2 for windows. Linky to main page
EDIT: I've always hated Itunes in it's insistence to install lots of other crap with it and the proprietary-esness of Apple products.
EDIT2: be sure to read all fine print just to be safe.

Converting from one compressed format to another will result in a loss of quality. So no. Unless you must convert for device compatibility.

Re-encoding from source is fine though, if you have the uncompressed sources.
