hello
which agree with my opinion based on the usage of many laptops:
that silly software that accompanies the laptops, eg acer epower manager, sony vaio sonicstage etc etc is TOTALLY bull****
why they put this on machines? its such a waste! they, in addition, advertise this crap software as a 'feature'!!!
how can sony vaio 's music player beat winamp pr your favorite media player?
acer 's epower manager is more crappy than windowsXP one!
most companies add these stupidities to convince us that the system they are selling is the best
in many cases, the systems arent even capable to run those manufacturer's programs properly and fast
I doubt if they have even sit for few hours to test their 'programs'
hope lot of company agents watch this forums
best regards

Yeap, most laptops always have crapware on their OS's when you buy it.
Right now, I think Fujitsu and ASUS are the only two which doesn't. All I have was Nortons(Which I uninstalled right away), Power4Gear and thats about it. -

Good joke there, users.
EDIT: Just to compare, my T41 came almost bare, but my Gateway had a lot of junk on it. -

To be honest I miss Toshiba's Power Management software on my old machine. Other than that. Crapware annoys me. When I got my machine, I did a fresh install of XP, not surpisingly.

I think it's actually a seperate question . . the software can be helpful, yes, but whether or not it is necessary is another question.
For example, on my Sager, only two pieces of software came preinstalled - Nero Burning software and WinDVD 5. Both are very usable. No crapware on here. -
imo commercial software (and ofcourse respectful as nero and windvd) is welcomed, as an option ofcourse
the notebook company 's crap is the problem that integrate too much in the system -
I didn't even bother booting into Windows when I got my notebook. I immediately reinstalled the OS and the drivers only.

Wow, this should be a given, no choices necessary. I wish manufacturers would take note.

I did boot mine up, but regretted it as soon as I did. I couldn't even tell you what all came up but it wasn't a pretty picture.
I had to wait a couple of days before I reformatted, but as soon as I got my disks, i started formatting it. I didn't even back up anything or ge the drivers copied. -
All the crap that comes with a new machine slows the thing down like crazy. It makes the computer seem really slow, and some people who might not know about that, may want to return the computer. But I think computer companies put all that extra trash and free trials on there, to get extra money for "Advertising" for the companies. It helps pay off the price of the OS.

IBM/Lenovo's software I actually find useful. I'm talking about the power management software, the hard disk protection software, keyboard/trackpoint/touchpad software - the stuff that runs at boot. Their other stuff like RecordNow/DLA, you may find useful or you may not (I don't), but it doesn't bug me that it just sits there.

WARNING: a long post
Hi girls, and guys,
So I guess my experience with the unpartitioned disk and no software whatsoever considers the best?
Perhaps for me. If you consider yourself a power user then all that junk is just slowing down everything, but for a someone that has never ever used the notebook it may be "helpful". At least to get to the point to understand what is there to set or watch over. (I'm talking here about software that actually does something useful and comes preinstalled)
The problem is that a new user first sees the "crapware" and then gradually learns about "obligatoryware". I would prefer the other way round.
Another problem is that you pay for it, regardless you want it or not! Advertisements? No thanks. I didn't buy my notebook to see adverts.
Software quality? Well don't crucify me right now, but to me for example some of the very well known software that sometimes come in bundled (starting with N, M and some other letters) is in the same box with adware, viruslike software that slows machines down and doesn't do anything better than you could after a few hours reading on the Internet and using your own head! You are (the person), THE antispyware, antivirus, firewall, cleaner, optimizer that any other company will NEVER have to offer. Just learn things. That is all. I guess at one point you will not have to use any of the automatic "guardians". It is a fake security anyway.
I understand "out of the box" people (people who like to open the box and have everything set nice and "cushty"). I'm just not one of them. It seems that as more as I know and use my computer(s), I want it/them simpler and don't care about many things that actually advertise (and obviously sell) "mainstream" brands. I apply this philosophy on the software too. I have like 30 apps that I use. I earn good money with it. I play games. I have WMP10 as the only player not because it is the best, but because it is enough. I don't use 3rd party skins, virus checkers, antispyware tools, custom firewalls, optimizers, network optimization tools, browsers... I do update Windows. And guess what - 6 hours of Internet per day (and I'm not surfing only LEGAL stuff). For testing purposes only (and I won a bet too) I downloaded or acquired serials and cracks from numerous sites that will kill any wish for downloading after you were bombed with tons of adverts, popups, javascript, flash, activex controls and redirecting. Do I need to say that I used IE6 on default security, sometimes Notepad and firewall built in Windows?
Is my notebook already infected? Due to the MS security hole? Exploit? Open ports? Registry? Net traffic? Is it a slow comp? I'm happy to say NO to all.
Well, I never had a slightest problem with viruses and spyware FOR YEARS. I didn't need to reinstall my windows on my last notebook FOR TWO YEARS. I usually hibernate my comp - NHC counted 190 days without restarting (my personal record - also on my last notebook!). I assure you that the average 800-1500 MB RAM allocation is not used for nothing every day. I do computing for a living. I also sometimes help other people to get rid of the darn spyware, and other "-warez". Sometimes, I admit, the reinstall is the only cure. It is not their fault not knowing something. The shame is in not wanting to know something. Is it easier to rely on some antivirus or antispyware TSR program that slows things so much, so you need a new hardware?
Now how many people do you know who "cannot" live without "tools" that will make their machine more "stable" and "better/faster" not mentioning "absolutely secure"? Everybody wants that. So I'm one of them too in a way. Only my app list is so much more different than theirs. And way shorter.
What company produces the majority of all software on your comp? And does it work well? Did you try tools like MS "Giant" Antispyware (for one and only one reason - to tell me when something CHANGED - that is enough for me - whatever it is) and MSN toolbar (it is not beta anymore), Synctoy and other Powertoys. Virtual PC is also great. It simply works well. Now many people will just say "he is a ..... MS ......". Well not true, many programs are there that I use every day like Picasa, NHC, ATT, Everest, VirtualDub... these programs simply work well too and are USEFUL. Sometimes I even use alternate programs for very well known tasks: PDF with Foxit? That little exe (no install) opens 200 MB pdf in lest than 1 sec! Do that with Acrobat reader! MOV with Quicktime? Not on my comp. What, I need a NEW APPLICATION that shows MOV? QT alternative is much better in my WMP10.
I install a great deal of demo and full games, mods, new betas, drivers and stuff. Sometimes daily. I'm just careful and always trying to do whatever I do with a bit of the common sense.
I apologize if I offended or upset anyone, it wasn't my intent. I guess the post is a bit too longrolleyes
, but you seem to be a good guys (and girls) and I hope you don't mind?
Cheers, -
First thing I do is uninstall everything that was preinstalled on my laptop. If I have time, I would do a complete reformat.
-
Most of the time, no. However, some of the stuff is useful. I do like how HP has an OS disc, and then a seperate install this that lets you install what you want unattended.
-
Step one:
Check what is on the machine, specific hardware and dirves.
Step two:
Partition the drive.
Step three:
Format and reinstall only what I want.
So I guess that would imply, no I don't find much of it very useful. -
About the only useful thing I keep is the DVD playback software. Other than that I have yet to find anything useful. Thankfully Fujitsu doesn't bundle much to start with (just NAV and quicken, first installed, second on CD)
software from notebook manufacturer
