    what software should i install which aren't ram hogs. I'm starting from scratch so i basically need everything

    just install what u need

    maybe install a free and good antivirus like AVG

    I am in the same boat with my laptop with 512mb ram and running fantastically!
    First install your XP or whatever OS with the least option! Dont install any junk.

    Second Dont install the biggest memory hog software (antivirus). I do my scans for free online..(just dont download crap files from unknown sites)
    Most Web emails have built in virus scanner...

    Third use (MSCONFIG) to remove unwanted resource hoggers like AOL, MSN,Yahoo Mesanger,realplayer or anything that you dont need.

    Fourth just keep it clean,,keep doing defragments,and downlaod registry booster to keep your system clean...
