Since I wasn't able to go starting windows normally due to messing up with my registry, I used puppy linux to back-up all the data. Now, I am trying to figure out if I can use puppy linux to edit the registry I messed up with in microsoft. Can I do that? If yes, can someone pls show me the step-by-step procedure? PLease? Thanks in advance

Here is my question, did you try holding F8 while turning on the notebook?
then booting "last known good config"?
That will usually fix any reg problem. -
You can with Knoppix, but it is a super pain in the butt....here's a walk through using chnptw that comes in knoppix
http://codeidol.com/unix/knoppix/Rescue-Windows/76-Edit-the-Windows-Registry/
I believe the same tool comes with the offline nt password changer program
http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/
Moral Hazard's suggestion is better, plus there are some other tricks you might use depending on what exactly you did and what your ultimate goal is....for example, you can pull a registry hive in XP out of your system recovery points -
well, now that i've read all your other posts....
tap the f8 key when starting to boot into safe mode, load your administrator account, run system restore to an earlier point in time, and stop messing with your computer -

Or at the VERY LEAST, stop messing with your computer without having a complete image of the C: partition.

-I tried that but that didn't work either since I am just stuck in the user-accounts page. -

-the problem is, we didn't have any administrator password but the computer asks for it. I asked everyone in the house if they indicated an administrator password, all of them said no. Is there some sort of a default administrator password? I've read the net about that and they said that if you didn't really put or save an administrator password, just leave it blank which I did but didn't work too.

I would get an XP installation disk and "repair the OS".

-It asks for an administrator password which really don't know what to put 'cos we really didn't remember putting an administrator, and even a user-account password, before.
-
If you never put in an admin password, just hit Enter to enter a blank password.

- I really don't remember putting any admin password, but it asks for it upon safe mode or during recovery console. I tried hitting enter without typing any password but nothing happened. I only ended up lagging due to hitting enter 3x... -
Oh boy....
People forgetting their passwords. Technically there are ways around it. But I'll let your figure out how by your self. -

Can you just take the hard drive to another computer and edit the registry form there (external usb or a secondary internal)?
-
Are you asking if it is possible (yes) or asking hiim why he didn't?
As it is, he's already wiped out the drive and reinstalled, so it is a mute point. -

-Is this possible? You mean if I transferred my the internal IDE HD of my desktop (the one I messed up with the registry) to another CPU, I can edit the registry there? Isn't the registry stored or located in the HD too? Kindly please enlighten me

-I'm sorry, Gerry. I had no option but to reformat our desktop 'cos my mum and younger brother were getting pissed at me since they badly need to do their papers and other itineraries in the computer.
But I really wanted to learn how to fix my problem w/o resorting to reformatting which really eat a lot of time

Yes, you can use regedit32 to load a remote hive for offline editing by dropping the drive in another machine. Or use some utility like LoadHive. Or, even better, make yourself a bootable BartPE (windows xp running from cd) with RegistryPE, or VistaPE which has some sort of registry editor built in (cannot remember the name).
I started to make that point in one of your threads, but you made so many it was lost in the shuffle. This is one of many reasons you post ONE THREAD. You get all your info in one place and we helpers don't need to run all over the place trying to keep up with the fix.
ON a side point, did I really say MUTE point? Criminey, I meant MOOT point. Sheesh -

-Btw, "Or, even better, make yourself a bootable BartPE (windows xp running from cd) with RegistryPE, or VistaPE which has some sort of registry editor built in (cannot remember the name)." - how do I do this?
-I'm sorry. Next time I will try to only post one thread.
