So... know of any prettier applications that will show the current brightness and volume when you change them?

I removed it from the startup menu, volume and brightness still work, it just doesn't display.

I just use my eyes for a meter. I adjust the brightness til my eyes are satisfied. Screw the meter. It doesn't tell jack%&$*. The volume meter is crap also. Just adjust it til you are comfortable with it.
