ok this has got me baffled. i am connected to THREE, yes count them THREE wireless networks of the same name. the internet is provided by a company called Connecting Point here. what i want to know is how is this even possible? the connections are all average connections.
-
how do you know you are connected to 3 networks?
-
by moving my mouse over the network icon in the sys tray.
-
Could we have a screen shot?
cheers ... -

looks like your connection profiles got messed up. this is 3 times the same connection, but stores 3 times as a different one. then, win7 checked, which one you connected, and found 3 matches.
in the network manager, you can somewhere manage your wireless networks. i'd suggest merging the three (you can do that, there might be tiny differences in them, and that's why they initially got created) to one again. then, it should look nice again. -
i will try that dave. oh and i am using vista not win7. no worries though.

I agree with Dave, try reconfiguring your wireless connections and fuse those 3 connections to make things normal.

I'm missing some terminology here.
If you have a router A you can extend its network, for example by a router B.
In Sheffield Hallam university you have several access points, all on the same name, but they will be numbered as yours are.
So when you have 3 listed as you have right now, you are within range of 3 wireless routers, working together on the same network.
This is why they are numbered. -
something strange
