What laptop does your friend have, and did you download all of the necessary laptop drivers prior to attempting to install Windows XP? Did you install all of the required notebook system and chipset drivers?

If you're installing the Realtek HD audio drivers, you'll need to download and install the Microsoft UAA bus drivers first, which can be found at Microsoft's support pages.

If this is a recent laptop you probably need to install the Microsoft UAA bus driver first. You should be able to just google it and download the package. Then try installing the sound card if you're sure you have the right drivers.

he has a dell precision m65. He said he brought it to the computer lab at school, and they installed xp for him. so he isnt sure if they downloaded all the drivers prior to installing. when i go to device manager his audio driver says legacy audio driver so i do not think its realtek hd

The Dell Precsion m65 requires the Sigmatel HD audio drivers. You'll also need the UAA bus drivers from Microsoft
