Does anyone know of a simple application that I could use split AVI files (actually, just one file) with minimal decay in quality?

    Windows Movie Maker?

It should do it for you and its easy to use.

Also try AviDemux its a x264 encoder but has a built in editor, so you can cut the clip in half and then re-render it with H264 & AAC giving same quality with a much smaller file size.

There are some other programs that are great but require avisynth scripts and there is no easy way to use those until you learn the scripting (im still learning myself)

Some other great programs for encoding

    StaxRIP
    MeGUI
    HandBrake

I have not checked out the 1st or 3rd in a while, since they are GUI based encoders for x264 they may have added a simple editor or clip selector like AviDemux has.

I want to say VirtualDub also cuts clips, as I think that is what AviDemux uses inside its GUI but I only use it to extract .wav tracks out of a video to encode them to AAC with nero.

Thanks a lot! VritualDub was the software I was looking for. I simply used direct stream copy to save a shortened version without ever having to convert.
