Can anyone recommend a startup manager application?

Something to do the same as from msconfig, but that will let me save profiles or make different setups for different users.

I downloaded "Chamaleon Startup Manager", but I couldn't figure how to save profiles to load later.

    Thanks.

You have Vista then why not use Windows Defender's Software Explorer mate , its great features in Windows Defender which is built into the Vista .

Open Defender > Click Tools, and then click Software Explorer.

or if you want powerful app then try autoruns from sysinternals

Thanks for your reply & link.

I didn't find an option to save profiles in Defender.

I want to have an "everyday use" profile and a "gaming" profile, and load each when I need it and restart.

I am tweaking around with Autoruns, which seems to be what I want... I hope I don't mess up my Vista too much...

Yes, autoruns did what I wanted... at first I unchecked too much, and after reboot I coudn't use the keyboard and it didn't recognize my AC adapter :swoon:

However I system restored to the day before and everything was OK again.

EDIT: Actually, it doesn't do what I want. When I save a profile and then load it, It does not reboot as the profile says, so I still have to check/uncheck millions of boxes.

Any other choice for easy restarting with desired startup profiles? Thanks!

I guess I am a bit confused. Has not there been a separate STARTUP for each user since at least Windows 2000?

I guess if I had a need to accomplish this I would simply create additional users. Changing between them would be a Logoff/Logon rather than a reboot.

yes, I tried that. Having a different user for each profile would be very useful, but msconfig changes things for both users equally.

You said you tried Autoruns and it didn't work for you, but maybe you missed the feature.

It doesn't have "profiles", but you can save a profile and load it.

So, load a profile with everything checked, save it as default.arn. Now, uncheck all the extras and save it as game.arn

You have to load autoruns, and click FILE > LOAD and then reboot to go back and forth between "profles" but it will work.

Yes, that´s exactly what I did, and after loading the "gaming profile.arn" and rebooting, all the extras I unchecked are still there... Maybe I am doing something wrong(?)

Can I use autoruns (or other software) to make a startup setup apply only for one user and not the others?
